Workshop Department is one of the most dynamic units of any Technical Institution. In Government Polytechnic, Panaji, the Workshop Department handles the largest number of students, compared to any other Department, in any given year.
The Department is headed by the Workshop Superintendent and is assisted by Instructors in the various Sections, imparting skills to students in various trades. The Department has various Sections such as Carpentry, Fitting, Foundry, Smithy, Welding and Machine Shop.
In the first term, of any of the Diploma Programmes, every student is trained in the basic skills in Carpentry, Fitting, Lathe Operations and Sheet Metal Work. The students get acquainted with the usage of basic tools and equipments in in each of the above Sections, so as to enable them to acquire the basic skills required to perform the various jobs in these fields. The skills are further developed to a higher level, in the succeeding terms, based on the individual Diploma Programme.
From the Third Term onwards till the end of the programme, the facilities of the Workshop are extensively used by the students of Mechanical Engineering Department. Nonetheless the Workshop Department also provides support to the other Departments as and when required.
A number of projects of varied nature, have been developed by the Workshop Department. The projects were fully designed and manufactured in house, utilizing the resources available within the Department.
